Supporting Long Term Cybersecurity Capability in the Balkans
CRDF Global is proud to introduce the latest initiative in its Digital Resilience and Cybersecurity: the Balkans Fusion Security Operations Center (SOC) Alliance, launched in partnership with the Goce Delcev University in Štip, North Macedonia and funded by the U.S. Department of State.
The design and implementation of the Balkans Fusion SOC Alliance reflects these organizations’ shared commitment to strengthening trusted, secure, and interoperable digital environment in alignment with United States cybersecurity best practices and strategic priorities.
A central pillar of the project is the establishment of a University-based Security Operations Center (SOC), designed as a dual-use platform. Initially serving as an advanced educational and training environment, the SOC will evolve into an operational capability that enables hands-on experience in threat detection, analysis, and response. This model bridges the critical gap between theory and practice, producing job-ready professionals capable of contributing immediately to national and regional cybersecurity efforts.
By investing in practical, skills-based education and operational readiness, this initiative supports the transition of the national cybersecurity posture from a passive consumer of security solutions to an active contributor and producer of cybersecurity capabilities aligned with trusted international partners.
At the kick-off ceremony held this week at Goce Delcev University, Nate Morin, who serves as the Global Digital Resilience and Cybersecurity Lead for CRDF Global, thanked partners from the University, the Ministries of Digital Transformation and Education, as well as the U.S. State Department.
“Building and maintaining resilience is becoming increasingly critical as so much of our lives, including essential services citizen services, move increasingly online,” Morin said. “This move towards greater levels of digitalization and online services has unlocked new capabilities and made many parts of our daily lives simpler. Unfortunately, it has also created lucrative new digital targets for both criminal and nation state attackers. These attacks can threaten the availability of these critical systems. We’re proud to be able to contribute to the development of the Western Balkans Fusion SOC Alliance and the increased security operations and analysis capabilities it will provide to all the participants.”
The project further leverages the cutting-edge expertise of CRDF Global and the Carnegie Mellon University Software Engineering Institute, ensuring the transfer of proven methodologies, operational know-how, and institutional capacity. This includes specialized training for academic staff in both curriculum development and SOC operations, embedding long-term sustainability and excellence within the national ecosystem.
This partnership represents a strategic investment in human capital, institutional resilience, and trusted technological development, advancing not only national security, but also reinforcing the broader transatlantic commitment to a secure and resilient digital future.
