Creating a safer world by tackling global security challenges
Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, and high yield Explosives (CBRNE) are weapons that have the potential to create both mass casualties as well as mass disruption to society.
For more than 25 years – beginning with our role supporting scientists after the fall of the Soviet Union – CBRNE security has been at the core of our mission. We partner with international government agencies, industry, academia, and non-government organizations to develop solutions to mitigate the proliferation of CBRNE threats and the intentional and accidental misuse of these materials. Our projects strengthen international safety and security culture by enhancing risk management practices, improving in-country detection and response capabilities, securing facilities, and encouraging collaborative partnerships to reduce risk.

Combating Chemical Security Threats from Returning Foreign Fighters
Dangerous threats at the hands of foreign fighters– individuals who have returned from participating in terrorist acts or trainings abroad– are a growing security concern for many countries. To help mitigate these emerging threats, CRDF Global partnered with the U.S. Department of State’s Office of Cooperative Threat Reduction, INTERPOL, the UN, and the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons to implement a series of workshops and trainings for over 120 law enforcement, regulatory, and academic personnel from Africa, Europe, and Asia.

Securing Chemical Facilities in Lebanon
Following the ammonium nitrate explosion in Beirut on August 4, 2020, chemical industries across the Middle East have started to re-examine security practices that leave them vulnerable to accidental or intentional chemical incidents as well as the theft of chemicals for illicit purposes.
This year, CRDF Global joined the Lebanese CBRN National Commission in their efforts to re-assess chemical security management and chemical inventory practices to establish a more solid foundation for public safety and security of facilities.
Biosecurity & Biosafety
Ebola Outbreak in the DRC
Since 2019, CRDF Global has worked closely with the National Institute of Biomedical Research (INRB), located in Kinshasa, Democratic of Congo (DRC), in renovating an existing subterranean space into a functional biorepository capable of storing a large number of biological samples safely and securely. Renovation efforts included electrical and plumbing installation, refurbishment of floors and ceilings to meet technical specifications, and installation of key security elements (caging, locks, etc.) to restrict access to authorized personnel.

Enhancing Global Health Security
In 2020, CRDF Global expanded its strategic efforts in global health security with new work acquired through the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the Central Asia Region, South and Southeast Asia Region, and Middle East-North African Region to enhance regional and national preparedness to prevent, detect, and respond to COVID-19 and other health threats by strengthening regional public health emergency management systems.
Nuclear Security
Nuclear Security and Nonproliferation Workshop in Malaysia
In partnership with the U.S. Department of State’s Partnership for Nuclear Security Program, CRDF Global conducted a nuclear security and nonproliferation workshop in Malaysia for academics, students, and researchers from universities and research institutions in South Asia.
The workshop focused on the importance of insider threat mitigation and covered topics such as IAEA safeguards, real-life case studies of insider threat, and components of an effective nuclear regime.
Nuclear Security
Opening the Dialogue on Nuclear Security in South Asia
CRDF Global, in partnership with the World Institute for Nuclear Security (WINS), conducted the Nuclear Security and Nonproliferation Webinar Series for academics, students, nuclear industry representatives, and researchers from universities and research and policy institutions from South and Southeast Asia. Twelve external subject-matter experts from 10 countries presented various nuclear security topics and facilitated discussions with participants, providing an open space to share best practices and thoughts on how to sustain peace and security in the region.
